Happy third birthday, Adrienne Marie! (7/6/2001)

Brussels sprouts are another vegetable that frequently gets bad press. I happen to love them. My favorite way of preparing them is to steam them, meanwhile frying, draining and crumbling a slice or two of bacon. When the sprouts are steamed, cool them and slice them in half lengthwise, then toss them in a bit of the bacon grease until they're warmed again. Sprinkle with the crumbled bacon and some caraway seeds, and serve. Tossing them in a little garlic butter and squirting them with lemon juice is good, too.

That sounds wonderful, Jeanne, I wouldn't have thought of adding the caraway. I'm mighty fond of brussels sprouts roasted whole with chunks of sweet potatoes and then tossed with olive oil, herbs, and bacon. I start craving that in late September.

Today I'm harvesting the first fennel bulbs of the year. Maybe I'll make a fennel and cauliflower soup . . .
