North Carolina Style Coleslaw

1 small head cabbage, sliced, and tossed in one cup of:

• 2 C cider vinegar
• 1 1/2 C water
• 1/2 C ketchup
• 1/4 C brown sugar
• 5 t salt, or more to taste
• 1 T hot red pepper flakes
• 2 T tabasco or similar
• 1 t black pepper
• 1 t white pepper

  make up the sauce, let it sit for about an hour, then toss with the cabbage, and let sit another half-hour. it's kinda odd, but good. sweet-sour and a good kick of heat.
