Darwin's bitch.

What's traditional steamed Boston Brown Bread like? I have an amazing recipe for brown bread, but it's nothing like the BBB version that's full of rye and cornmeal and all that stuff. Is BBB any good?

My great grandmother was a widow who supported herself and her young daughter by running a boarding house during the Great Depression. She fed this bread to her lodgers, and it became so popular that she started selling it to supplement her income. Back in Vancouver my grandmother still bakes bread in the same four-loaf pans that her mother used back in the thirties. One day, they'll be mine.

Here's the Recipe for the greatest, most comforting bread of all time:

Lindsay's Grandmother's Bread

Makes four loaves:
1 Tblsp. yeast or 1 cake yeast If you use a cake of yeast you would save out 1/2 cup of H20 to proof it.
4 C Luke warm water
1/2 Cup Molasses
1 Tblsp. salt
1/2 cup melted shortening or oil
6 cups white flour
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup sugar

Assemble via the standard bread method, adding the fat to the liquid ingredients and prepping the yeast in that mixture. You can vary the amount of whole wheat flour but the more you add the stickier it is.
